An Introduction to Relativistic Quantum Mechanics I. From Relativity to Dirac Equation
نویسنده
چکیده
By using the general concepts of special relativity and the requirements of quantum mechanics, Dirac equation is derived and studied. Only elementary knowledge of spin and rotations in quantum mechanics and standard handlings of linear algebra are employed for the development of the present work. PACS number(s): 03.30.+p, 03.65.Pm

The Pauli equation in scale relativity
In standard quantum mechanics, it is not possible to directly extend the Schrödinger equation to spinors, so the Pauli equation must be derived from the Dirac equation by taking its non-relativistic limit. Hence, it predicts the existence of an intrinsic magnetic moment for the electron and gives its correct value. In the scale relativity framework, the Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon and Dirac equat...
متن کاملA summer study at the borders of quantum mechanics and general relativity
This article reports on a student summer project performed in 2006 at the University of Frankfurt. It is addressed to undergraduate students familiar with the basic principles of relativistic quantum mechanics and general relativity. The aim of the project was to study the Dirac equation in curved space time. To obtain the general relativistic Dirac equation we use the formulation of gravity as...
متن کاملQuantum–classical transition in scale relativity
The theory of scale relativity provides a new insight into the origin of fundamental laws in physics. Its application to microphysics allows us to recover quantum mechanics as mechanics on a non-differentiable (fractal) spacetime. The Schrödinger and Klein–Gordon equations are demonstrated as geodesic equations in this framework. A development of the intrinsic properties of this theory, using t...
متن کاملHermitian Dirac Hamiltonian in time dependent gravitational field
It is shown by a straightforward argument that the Hamiltonian generating the time evolution of the Dirac wave function in relativistic quantum mechanics is not hermitian with respect to the covariantly defined inner product whenever the background metric is time dependent. An alternative, hermitian, Hamiltonian is found and is shown to be directly related to the canonical field Hamiltonian use...
متن کاملClassical versus quantum dynamics for a driven relativistic oscillator
We compare the time evolution of the quantum-mechanical spatial probability density obtained by solving the time-dependent Dirac equation with its classical counterpart obtained from the relativistic Liouville equation for the phase-space density in a regime in which the dynamics is essentially relativistic. For a resonantly driven one-dimensional harmonic oscillator, the simplest nontrivial mo...
